Short description
The coloration is a complex marbled pattern consisting of alternating brown, olive, or gray spots on a lighter (whitish) background. Numerous small reddish-brown or orange dots are scattered throughout the body and fins. Short, sinuous lines and orange spots are often visible on the head. The dorsal fin has characteristic filiform appendages (tassels) at the ends of the rays, a feature common to the hawkfish family.
