Short description
The body is elongated with smooth skin covered with long sharp spines, which are modified scales. The upper body, sides and fins are tan, brown or gray. Numerous small dark spots are scattered over the entire surface of the body, head and fins, there are no large spots. The breast is white. Fish in this family can change the intensity of their coloration to blend in with a coral reef or the seabed. When resting (especially during the day), porcupinefish often enhance their pattern for improved camouflage. When startled or actively moving, their coloration can quickly fade.
