Short description
The body is elongated, with smooth skin covered in long, sharp spines that are modified scales. The upper body, sides, and fins are yellowish-brown, brown, or gray. Numerous small dark spots are scattered over the entire surface of the body, head, and fins; there are no large spots. The belly is white. During courtship, male Spot-fin porcupinefish often follow females in a circular motion. This dance can last for some time, and they may gently nudge each other.
