Short description
The body is yellowish-gray with a greenish back and yellowish belly. The body and fins are marked with rows of dark gray or blackish-brown spots. The pelvic fins are longer than the pectoral fins. The dorsal fin is long, and the caudal fin has rounded edges and often has a yellowish tint. Rubberlips are passive during the day. They gather in small schools or groups, often hovering over coral reefs, under overhangs, or in the shade of corals. Blackspotted rubberlips are capable of vocalizing using muscles associated with the swim bladder (hence the name "grumblers").
