The body color is yellowish-gray with scattered irregular dark spots. The lips are yellowish, with the upper lip being more intense. A red spot is located at the upper base of the pectoral fins. The fins are bluish-gray and spotted, with paler fin bases and reddish margins on the dorsal and caudal fins. Lethrinus xanthochilus can rapidly change color from light, almost silver, to spotted or dark, with dark stripes appearing on the body for camouflage or communication.
