The back is light gray-olive, the belly is white. A bright yellow stripe runs along the body from the eye to the tail. A distinct black spot is present under the first dorsal fin (often in the middle of the yellow stripe). There are two dorsal fins, and the caudal fin is forked, often yellowish. Two movable chin barbels are used for searching for invertebrates in the sand.
