Short description
The dorsal surface of the fish is greenish with dark spots, the sides are pale gray, and the underside is white. There is a lateral row of large white spots, each with one or more small black spots in the center. The underside has additional black spots, mostly edged with yellow. Males have diagonal yellowish-brown or black stripes on the cheeks and gill covers, a large black spot at the base of the spiny rays of the dorsal fin, and a large black spot in the center of the caudal fin that is more prominent than in females. Females have scattered small dark (brown) spots instead of stripes on the cheeks and the top of the head; the spot on the dorsal fin may be smaller or absent.
