Short description
The head and body range from dark brown to grayish-brown. The anterior portion resembles a common catfish, while the posterior portion is elongated, like an eel, tapering toward the tail. The body lacks scales or bony plates. Two pale stripes run along the sides of the body, extending onto the head. In larger specimens, the stripes are less pronounced. Four pairs of barbels surround the mouth. The second dorsal and anal fins are connected to the caudal fin. The serrated, spiny rays of the first dorsal and pectoral fins are connected to venom glands, and a sting from these can cause a very painful wound.
