Short description
The body is brown or almost black, with darker scale edges. Adults often have a black spot at the base of the posterior dorsal fin. The head may have lavender or blue markings, and the lips are whitish. During courtship, males display a wide white stripe across the body and a whitish stripe from the snout to the base of the pectoral fins. This is a territorial species, aggressively driving any algae-feeding fish from its areas.
