Short description
The color varies from reddish to brown and gray, there are numerous thin transverse dark stripes on the body and head. The dorsal fin has 13 long, strong spines and 9-11 soft rays. The thorns are extremely poisonous, a sting from a lionfish thorn can lead to death.
