Short description
The male is reddish-brown anteriorly with a red upper lip and dark stripes around the mouth, and greenish posteriorly with dark scale edges. The dark scale edges create a reticulated pattern. Dark stripes surround the mouth. A key feature is a bright green or yellowish spot with a dark border above the eye. The dorsal fin is yellow-green or reddish. Unlike females, male Scarus niger appear greener and more contrasting.
