The male is reddish-brown in front with a red upper lip and dark stripes around the mouth, and greenish in back with dark scale edges. The dark scale edges create a reticulated pattern. Dark stripes surround the mouth. A key feature is a bright green or yellowish spot with a dark border above the eye. The dorsal fin is yellow-green or reddish. The female is dark blue or brownish-black. The head, belly, and fins are reddish, the sides have wavy stripes, and dark green stripes around the mouth and eyes. The yellowish spot above the eye is absent. Unlike females, male Scarus niger appear greener and more contrasting.
