Short description
The Great barracuda is blue-gray above, fading to silver and chalky white below. Sometimes a row of darker transverse stripes appears on its upper side, with black spots on each underside. The second dorsal fin, anal fin, and caudal fin range from dark purple to black with white tips. The silvery scales reflect light, making the fish nearly invisible in the water column. Dark spots on the back break up the silhouette, helping camouflage it against the bottom. Changing camouflage involves changing position: from camouflage against a light background (near the surface) to bottom camouflage.
