Short description
The coloration varies from reddish to brown with characteristic white or dark spots, often with a longitudinal red stripe. The first dorsal fin is short, with a small adipose fin, and the tail is deeply forked. It often has a black spot on the gill cover. The head is broad, flattened at the top, reminiscent of a lizard. This species often burrows into the sand, leaving only the eyes exposed.
