Short description
As the clam grows, the three central clusters of (usually) pink tubercles remain the same, except that they merge in young specimens and separate in larger specimens. These tubercles can range in color from pink to green to white. The intensity of the pink and green-gray coloration is probably related to diet and the length of time since the last feeding. Other distinguishing features include a pale pink edge to the mantle and broad, triangular, black-tipped oral tentacles.
